What is Breast Augmentation Surgery in Korea?

Breast augmentation mammoplasty implant placement in Korea - MISOODA (Singapore)

Breast augmentation, also known as Augmentation mammoplasty, beautifully enlarges the size, shape or fullness of a woman’s small breasts according to the body shape and proportion of individuals and makes beautiful breasts. The surgeon place silicone, saline or alternative composite breast implants under the chest muscles or breast tissue.

The most recently widely used implant composite is “Cohesive Gel Implant”. There are 3 popular types of breast implants that are widely used in South Korea: Textured Teardrop Type, Textured Round Type and Smooth Round Type. Smooth type has more natural movement than textured type due to thin surface and soft touching. Texture type (round & teardrop) is natural due to gravity and retains natural shape in any moving position even when lying down. Choosing the right implant for the individual’s body size should be decided after adequate consultation with the surgeon with many years of breast surgery experience to achieve natural and voluminous breast line.

There are three incision methods for breast implants: areola (nipples), armpit, and underneath the breasts (inframammary). Incision site also needs to be discussed while choosing breast implant. If you are expecting to get pregnant in the future, the armpit or underneath the breasts approach will be preferred when considering breast feeding. If you want to minimize scarring, the areola approach will be considered. As every surgical procedure has risks, breast augmentation is no exception. Complications such as capsular contracture, infection, nipple or breast sensation reduction, as well as implant ruptures or leaks could also occur.

Recovery

Breast augmentation recovery timeline in Korea

What the first weeks usually look like after implant breast augmentation. Your surgeon sets the exact timing for your case.

WhenWhat happens
Surgery dayAbout 2–3 hours under general anaesthesia; 8 hours of fasting beforehand
Day 3Drain (Hemovac) removed — only if one was placed; many implant cases need none, depending on the technique
Week 1Tightness and swelling are strongest; light walking, no lifting or arm-raising exercise
Days 5–14Wound check. If the incision is in the breast fold (inframammary) and the clinic closes it with surgical skin glue, there are no stitches to remove and many patients fly home within about 7 days; with stitches, they come out at about 2 weeks
Weeks 2 and afterCorrective bra for at least 2 weeks, longer if your surgeon advises; upper-body exercise only after your surgeon clears it
Months 1–3Swelling settles and the implants gradually drop into their final position

Plan about 7 days in Korea for a glue-closed inframammary incision without a drain, or about 2 weeks with stitches or a drain. Your surgeon confirms which applies before you book flights. Your MISOODA case manager books every follow-up and stays in touch after you go home.

Safety

Breast augmentation risks and possible complications

Every implant surgery carries risk, in Korea as anywhere else. This is what your surgeon should walk you through before you decide. It is general information, not a prediction for your case.

Possible issueWhat it meansHow it is reduced or handled
Bleeding or fluid collection (hematoma, seroma)Blood or fluid gathers around the implant in the first days; it can need a drain or a short return to theatreCareful haemostasis, a drain where the surgeon judges it necessary, and a wound check in the first week
InfectionRedness, heat, fever or discharge; rarely the implant has to be removed and replaced laterSterile technique, antibiotics as prescribed, and prompt contact with your clinic if symptoms appear
Capsular contractureScar tissue around the implant tightens and the breast feels firm or looks changed; the risk rises over the yearsPocket and implant choice, post-op massage only if your surgeon advises it, and regular follow-up
Implant malposition, asymmetry or ripplingThe implant sits too high, low or to the side, or edges can be seen or felt, especially in thin patientsPre-op sizing, choosing the pocket plane for your tissue, and waiting 3 months for the implant to settle before judging
Changes in nipple or breast sensationNumbness or oversensitivity, usually temporary but sometimes lastingIncision and pocket planning; tell your surgeon about any change you notice
Implant rupture or the need for revisionImplants are not lifetime devices; revision or exchange may be needed years laterRegistered implant brands with a device card, and periodic check-ups with imaging if advised
Anaesthesia-related riskGeneral anaesthesia carries its own small risk, which is higher with some health conditionsPre-op health screening and an anaesthesiologist present during surgery

Plan for follow-up before you book. Ask who treats a complication after you fly home, how follow-up and any revision are handled, and what that costs. Your MISOODA case manager helps you confirm these in writing with the clinic before you commit. Final medical decisions are made with your surgeon; our coordination team does not give medical advice.

Operating-room CCTV: how to use it for your breast augmentation

Under Korea's Medical Service Act Article 38-2 (the Kwon Dae-hee Law, in force since 25 September 2023), operating rooms where patients are put under general anaesthesia or are otherwise unconscious must have CCTV installed. Recording starts only when the patient asks — clinics do not have to offer it first. Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia, so the law applies to you.

Ask in writing before surgery day. One line is enough: "I request CCTV recording of my surgery under Article 38-2 of the Medical Service Act" (in Korean: 의료법 제38조의2에 따라 수술 장면 CCTV 촬영을 요청합니다). Footage is kept for at least 30 days and is released only to investigators or courts, or with the consent of you and the medical staff filmed. A surgeon may decline in limited cases such as emergency surgery — if a clinic refuses for a planned breast augmentation, ask why before you book. See our guide to whether plastic surgery in Korea is safe.
